find alignment in your business

Feeling stuck? As a business owner, the most important work you can do is mindset work, and there’s no better time to “spring clean” your mindset than now and find alignment in your business and life.

Here’s how to give your mindset a much needed freshening up and find alignment in your business.

Finding Alignment in Your Business

One of the biggest reasons my clients express feeling stuck or frustrated is that they’re unaligned with their businesses, their values, and their goals. When you’re unaligned, it can feel like you’re stuck on a hamster wheel, running in circles without getting any closer to where you need to be.

Finding alignment in your business isn’t about being happy to work 100% of the time. Instead, it’s about taking small steps towards your goals and believing in your mission.

5 Ways to “Spring Clean” Your Mindset & Find Alignment in Your Business

Ready to start your spring cleaning? Start with these four steps.

1. Define your own version of success.

So much of my own mindset blocks–in my personal life and in my business–have come from comparing myself to others. But when I really sit down and think about it, it’s not fair to compare myself to others when our definitions of success are wildly different.

Take some time to really think about what success looks like to you. Does it mean making a certain amount of money? Living somewhere different? Starting a family? Your version of success might not fit the “typical” image you see online with all the jetsetting and mansions. That doesn’t mean it’s any less incredible.

Once you know what your version of success looks like, make a vision board. I like to make a digital vision board in Canva using photos that inspire me–of the kind of home I want to live in, the breed of dog I want to adopt (golden retriever, obviously), and destinations I want to travel to. Then, I set it as my wallpaper so I can see it all the time. Create your own vision board, and when you’re feeling down or stuck, look at it to get inspired and remind yourself why you’re working so hard.

2. Release what doesn’t serve you.

A big part of spring cleaning is getting rid of old, unused items. Spring cleaning your mindset works the same way. Consider what’s most worrying to you or what you seem to be stuck on. Then, ask yourself, “Does this worry serve me?” If it doesn’t, let it go.

Of course, this is way easier said than done. Releasing old worries and doubts takes time and practice. Try these exercises to let go of your worries:

  • Write them down and toss them. The physical act of writing down and then throwing away your stressors can be soothing. Plus, you create a memory and an image of you literally letting go that you can come back to whenever that worry pops back up. If you’re feeling really edgy and want to live out your 90s music video dreams, you can burn your worries like a love letter from an ex. (Safely, of course.)

  • Journal your way through them. I like to write down my worries, journal about them, and then try to get to their true roots. For example, if you’re worried about bills at the moment, you might discover through journaling that you’re not really worried about bills but instead feeling inadequate because your peers are making more than you. Then, I can work through the real issue–your self-esteem–instead of getting overwhelmed by the surface-level worries. Whatever you’re stressed about, try to find the root cause.

  • Imagine the worst-case scenario. It might sound counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to break through a mindset block is to imagine what would happen if your worst fears came through. If you’re worried about quitting your job to start your own business, ask yourself, “What would happen if I quit my job and then couldn’t make money in my business?” Would you go find a different job? Pivot your business idea? Freelance for someone else? Chances are, the worst case scenario isn’t nearly as bad as you’ve been worrying it would be.

Once you truly understand your worries, it’s much easier to let them go. And don’t stress if these thoughts keep popping back up; releasing what doesn’t serve you is a lifelong pursuit.

3. Make sure your actions align with your goals.

Setting goals is easy, but keeping them is hard. A huge reason I see business owners feeling unaligned in their businesses is that their day-to-day actions don’t align with their long-term goals.

Revisit your goals, and compare them to your to-do list. Are the items on your list moving you towards these goals? Does your daily work align with your values? Do you truly feel like you’re making progress towards the life you want to live? If not, it might be time for a pivot. If so, keep up the good work!

4. Craft your ideal routine.

It’s easy to feel stuck when you’re living the same day over and over again. While I’m a big fan of creating routines, I’m also a fan of switching things up a bit!

Grab your planner or journal, and create an hour-by-hour timeline of your ideal daily routine. Be sure to include your morning routine, working hours, and evening routine, plus time to do things that you really enjoy outside of work. Then, challenge yourself to live this routine for a week, and see how it improves your mindset.

As you create this routine, make sure it also aligns with your goals and vision for your life. If you want to become the type of person who works out daily, schedule thirty minutes for a quick home workout or walk around the neighborhood. If you want to become an early riser, start your ideal schedule at 6am instead of 8am. Again, it’s so important to align your daily actions with your long-term vision.

5. Prioritize self care.

Would it really be a Made With Lemons blog post without at least one mention of self care?

Prioritizing self care is vital to improving your mindset, especially when it comes to your business. You are your business’s greatest resource and asset. The better care you take of yourself, the better you can serve your business. Simple as that.

Set a goal to practice self care every single day. Take a walk. Read a book. Drink more water. However you prefer to nurture yourself, put it at the top of your to-do list. It’s the single most important thing.
